History and Life in Mount Vernon, VA
Lucky to live here. That’s how I feel. I grew up moving every year or two, so I appreciate having found my permanent home in a place that is both beautiful and historical. The drive along the GW Parkway in every season is not just for tourists—it is there for those of us who use it for commuting and carpooling if we only remember to enjoy it.
The Potomac is an equally important and attractive artery. Francis Gray of the Piscataway Conoy tribe promotes the idea of the river as the life of a community rather than a boundary between Virginia and Maryland. My purpose in writing this blog is to pique my neighbor’s interest in the history and natural beauty of the larger area around the Mount Vernon estate. George Washington’s life here is a fairly well-known story, but our community has so much more to tell us.
